What’s better for decks - paint or stain?
Stain penetrates wood and tends to be easier to maintain; it also preserves the natural colour of your wood. However, stain generally needs to be maintained more than paint coatings. Paint on the other hand, can peel if moisture gets underneath, but works better for some applications. We’ll recommend based on wood condition and what your expectations are.
How long before we can use the deck again?
The key to any lasting coating is the prep and the cure time. Typically we tell all our clients to wait 24–72 hours before using your deck depending on product and weather. Vancouver Island humidity can extend cure times and walking on deck surfaces too early can cause premature paint failure.
Do you power wash first?
Often yes, but carefully – aggressive washing can fuzz the wood. We clean properly, sand any fuzzy areas and then let it dry fully before any paint or stain coatings are applied.
How often should decks be maintained?
Every 2–4 years is common depending on sun/rain exposure and product choice. As you walk on your deck, the boards tend to slightly move so high use decks tend to get more maintenance than low traffic decks.
